Monaco princess-to-be meets crowds

MONACO - MONACO'S future princess, South African Charlene Wittstock, made her first official appearance as royal fiancee on Friday, waving to crowds from the balcony of her prince's palace.

Former Olympic swimmer Wittstock, 32, appeared smiling and waving in a beige Armani suit and brown hat for the annual royal appearance on the principality's national day. She stood alongside Prince Albert II, 52, whom she is to marry in July.

'I find her adorable!' said Rocco Benevento, 54, one among a crowd of cheering well-wishers.

'She is going to measure up to Albert's mother,' the US actress Grace Kelly, he added. 'This is a good thing, an important thing for the prince's image.'

It was Wittstock's first appearance at a royal ceremony and also the first time a royal fiancee has taken part in the national day appearance before the wedding.

'She is wonderful,' said Graziela Mussetti, a fan in her seventies. 'I liked her straight away, for her charm, her simpleness, and of course her beauty.' -- AFP
