JERUSALEM - VISITING Thai princess Chulabhorn Mahidol was very lightly wounded on Monday when her car was involved in a traffic accident in Jerusalem, government and hospital sources said.

Haddasah hospital spokesman Yael Bossem-Levy said that the princess arrived with a 'very slight injury' but would not give details.

Israel police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that she was being driven to a meeting with Israeli president Shimon Peres when her car was involved in a minor collision.

She proceeded to the visit, Peres' spokesman said, and only afterwards consented to go to the hospital for a checkup.

'There was a very slight multi-vehicle accident in her convoy,' the spokesman said. 'She just got a contusion in the accident, she would not be taken to hospital (immediately). She said that no matter what, she wanted to meet Shimon Peres.'

The princess, who is president of a cancer research institute in Thailand is in Israel to advance a number of bilateral scientific projects, Mr Peres' office said. -- AFP
