SYDNEY - THE SHOCKINGLY thin entrant in Australia's Miss Universe competition was publicly supported by the winner said reports on Friday.

Miss Universe Australia, Rachael Finch, said that her rival Stephanie Naumoska was just 'naturally thin'.

The 19-year-old Hurtsville model is 180cm tall and weighs just 49kg - making her malnourished by World Health Authority standards reported news.com.au.

Although she won the competition, Miss Finch was bombarded with questions about Miss Naumoska on Thursday.

'It has been a little overwhelming but I've been saying that Steph is an amazingly nice girl who happens to have a thin figure,' she said.

'Some girls are just naturally thin and Stephanie is exactly that.'

Acting Premier for New South Wales, Carmel Tebbutt described Miss Naumoska's appearance as 'disappointing'.

'We encourage girls and young women to aspire to be healthy, rather than look toward fitting one particular body image,' she said.

Miss Finch told reporters that she is well aware of the perils and pressures teen models face.

'I'm writing a book for girls who want to build a career in this field,' she said.

'It's a guide on what to do and not to do in the transition from teen to adult while modelling. It's about eating a healthy, balanced diet and why to not take drugs.'

Miss Finch will contest the overall Miss Universe contest in the Bahamas in August.
