Clinton off to Mid-East

WASHINGTON - US SECRETARY of State Hillary Clinton left for the Middle East and Europe late on Saturday in an attempt to improve relations with US allies there.

A plane carrying Mrs Clinton and her aides took off from Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington at about 10:50pm (0350 GMT Sunday, 11.50am Singapore time).

At the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Mrs Clinton will attend on Monday a donors conference aimed at rebuilding the Gaza Strip.

On Thursday in Brussels, she is scheduled to meet with her Nato counterparts and join them at an informal dinner, along with Swiss officials.

In Geneva, the secretary of state will have her first face-to-face meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. -- AFP
