The shamed Chelsea defender had reportedly bombarded pop-star wife Cheryl while she was in Los Angeles with phone messages begging her to take him back.
But on Tuesday, when she arrived back in England after sending her husband a text message ordering him to leave their £6million (S$13.1 million) Surrey mansion, her public relations company confirmed the separation on Twitter.
While the Girls Aloud star has basked in her role as Britain's sweetheart, cemented during her time as a judge on The X Factor, her husband has tried to be a sweetheart to many other women.
The count so far - and bear in mind that they have been married for less than four years - is five. The conquests include a hairdresser, two models, a secretary and an American political aide.
The entire marriage - from the moment the couple sold the rights to their wedding to OK! magazine for a reported £1.5 million - has been played out on the public stage and Cole, who now faces a £22 million divorce battle, has been painted as the villain.
